Salmon Ponds, 3 January 1940

Salmon Ponds is a trout hatchery near Plenty, about 45 km from Hobart. It was established in 1861 in an attempt to introduce salmon to Australia. This did not happen and the idea was abandoned after several unsuccessful realeases of salmon to the Derwent River. Trout, however, did like Tasmanian fresh waters and quickly established a thriving population. The historic hatchery is still there and continues to attract tourists.
